Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I get thermal anomaly errors after updating to firmware 3.12/3.13/3.14?
I’ve tried upgrading my MK3S from 3.11 to 3.12.1 and 3.12.2 several times; however, each attempt collapsed during thermal calibration or filled the screen with gibberish. Each time, I flashed 3.11 back on and the printer returned to flawless operation. Consequently, many users still see 3.11 as the most reliable firmware for this machine.
Should I update from firmware 3.11 or stay on it?
I’ve tried updating my MK3S from 3.11 to 3.12.1 and 3.12.2 several times; yet each attempt stalls—thermal calibration errors pop up or the screen fills with garbage characters. Every failure sends me back to flashing 3.11, which then runs without a hiccup. Judging by countless user reports, 3.11 still stands as the rock-solid firmware for the MK3S.
Should I upgrade my MK3S to MK4S or just buy a Bambu Lab printer?
The Upgrade from my MK3S+ to MK4S costs €738, but in terms of features and performance, it doesn’t come close to the P1S. If I wanted to sell my MK3S+ now, I’d be lucky to get €300 for it on the used market. Looking at Core One, I just don’t see compelling reasons to justify the higher price.
Is the Prusa ecosystem still worth it over Bambu Lab?
This is Prusa’s history, to not abandon users of older models and when possible, provide them with the opportunity to upgrade and improve their printers. I also believe that Prusa’s FDM future is Corexy and tool changers. However, When I originally bought my MK3S+, it was at the top of its class. But now, it feels like Prusa is playing catch-up rather than leading the industry.
Should I get the MMU3 or just buy a Bambu A1 with AMS Lite?
The workflow of fully automated multicolor printing with one button from orca slicer to the A1 has changed my 3D printing. I can design and build so much faster without having to think about all the steps between design and printing I had to do with the MK3S. I think a MK4 with MMU3 would cost around $1500. I love printables and I love my MK3s.
Is the MMU upgrade worth it for the MK3S?
The MMU is a common point of failure on Prusas that are equipped. Many users report significant reliability issues with MMU2S on the MK3S.
Why isn’t there documentation for the CR-200B v4.2.5 board in MK3S clones?
This question appears to be about a different printer (CR-200B). For Prusa MK3S, documentation is available at help.prusa3d.com
What’s the real maximum print speed of the MK3S?
While the MK3S can handle moderate speeds, it’s significantly slower than modern CoreXY printers. I only own a few bed slingers (2x MK3s and an ender), so I don’t know personally how much better a core xy could be, but the speed difference, I think, is a bit misleading. Sure it can print 250mm/s accurately but for most small to mid size prints it’ll never reach those speeds on each layer. The 4x times print speed realistically leads to an at best 2x overall print time which is model dependent.
