Kobra 3 Max

Multicolor printing with the Kobra 3 Max

Unlike some 3D printers that come with multicolor features built-in, the Kobra 3 Max requires the separate purchase of one or two ACE Pro units.

  • 4-color printing: Requires one Anycubic ACE Pro unit.
  • 8-color printing: Requires two Anycubic ACE Pro units, which connect to an 8-color filament hub.

The ACE Pro also includes an active filament drying function to improve print quality.

Modular multicolor system

The multicolor functionality is provided by the separately purchased Anycubic ACE Pro accessory.

  • 4- or 8-color printing: A single ACE Pro allows for four-color printing. Connecting two ACE Pro units with an eight-color feeder hub enables up to 8-color printing.
  • Integrated drying: The ACE Pro doubles as an active filament dryer, using a dual 200-watt PTC heater and fans to ensure filaments stay moisture-free during printing and storage.
  • Automatic filament management: For prints requiring multiple spools of the same color, the system can automatically switch to a backup spool to ensure prints continue uninterrupted. It also uses intelligent detection to recognize Anycubic’s RFID-chipped filaments.
  • Purge management: When swapping colors, the hotend purges a small amount of filament. The Anycubic Slicer Next allows users to manage this waste by purging into the infill of the part or into a separate “purge object”.
  • Filament compatibility: The ACE Pro is compatible with a range of filaments, but flexible materials like TPU are not supported with the multicolor system due to a risk of tangling.

Smart features and software

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) monitoring: With an optional camera accessory, AI can detect printing errors like “spaghetti” failures and automatically pause the print to save material. The optional camera also enables time-lapse photography and remote monitoring.
  • Kobra OS: The printer runs on Anycubic’s proprietary, closed-source Kobra OS. While functional, this custom firmware has less community support and customization options compared to open-source alternatives like Klipper.
  • Anycubic Slicer Next: Based on the popular Orca Slicer, this software is optimized for Anycubic’s printers. Later updates addressed initial launch issues and added features like purge management to reduce filament waste during color changes.
  • Anycubic App: This companion app offers features like remote monitoring, cloud printing, and a model library.

The Anycubic Software Ecosystem

Anycubic Slicer Next

Anycubic Slicer Next is built upon the open-source software Orca, tailored and optimized specifically for Anycubic printers. It incorporates advanced algorithms refined from various open-source iterations to elevate slicing precision and enhance the overall print quality of models.

Anycubic App

A mobile app specially designed for Anycubic printers, including remote control, remote monitoring, real-time printing records and other intelligent functions.

Community Feedback and Potential Issues

Based on user reviews, the Anycubic Kobra 3 Max is generally well-received for its large size and printing capabilities. However, some common points of discussion include:

  • Slicer Software: Anycubic’s proprietary slicer, while improving with updates, has been noted by some users as a point of frustration compared to more established options like PrusaSlicer or Cura.
  • Nozzle Quality: Some initial reports mentioned issues with the included 0.4 mm nozzle clogging frequently. Anycubic has since worked to address this, but having spare nozzles is a good idea.
  • Physical Footprint: The “bedslinger” design means the printer requires significant space, as the bed moves forward and backward. It cannot be placed flush against a wall.

Overall, the Anycubic Kobra 3 Max is seen as a powerful tool for creators who need to produce large-scale, multi-color projects and are willing to handle some initial setup and optimization.

What’s In Box

Pros

  • Massive Build Volume: The 420 x 420 x 500 mm build space is a standout feature, making it ideal for large projects like cosplay armor and prototypes that would be impossible on smaller printers.
  • Multicolor and Multi-Material Capability: When paired with the optional Anycubic Color Engine (ACE) Pro, the printer can handle up to eight colors, and the ACE unit also functions as a heated filament dryer.
  • High-Speed Printing: With a maximum speed of 600 mm/s and a recommended speed of 300 mm/s, it offers high-speed performance, a major upgrade from previous models.
  • Advanced Automated Features: Includes the LeviQ 3.0 auto-leveling system and AI Spaghetti Detection (with optional camera), making it user-friendly for a large-format machine.
  • Competitive Price: The Kobra 3 Max offers a large build volume and advanced features at a very reasonable price point compared to some high-end competitors.
  • Improved Stability: The dual Y-axis motors help reduce layer misalignment and enhance the stability of the large bed, addressing a common concern with “bedslinger” style printers.

Cons

  • Large Physical Footprint: The “bedslinger” design requires significant space, especially at the back, to accommodate the moving bed and its cables.
  • Filament Waste: The color-changing system requires a purge, leading to a significant amount of wasted filament, a common issue with multi-color FDM printers.
  • Potential Quality Control Issues: Some user reports indicate issues with components like the stock nozzle, which may clog frequently, or problems with the initial setup requiring tinkering.
  • Slicer Software: While improving, the proprietary Anycubic Slicer may lack some advanced features and user-friendliness compared to more mature software like Cura or Orca Slicer.
  • Not a Beginner-Friendly “Out-of-the-Box” Experience: Despite automated features, some user reviews suggest the initial setup and troubleshooting may be challenging for a first-time 3D printer owner.
  • “Bedslinger” Limitations: The moving bed design, while suitable for its size, can be more prone to vibrations at extremely high speeds compared to CoreXY-style printers.
